TVET Colleges Explained

TVET colleges — Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges — don't always get the same attention as universities in career conversations at school, but for a lot of learners they're a faster, more affordable, and more direct route into real employment. All public TVET colleges are registered and accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the same department that oversees universities.

What TVET colleges actually offer

TVET colleges specialise in practical, career-focused qualifications — think Engineering trades, IT support, Hospitality, Financial Management, Early Childhood Development and Office Administration, among many others. Programmes are generally built around a specific occupation rather than a broad academic field, and often include a strong workplace or practical training component.

How TVET differs from university

  • Entry requirements are generally lower and more accessible than degree-level requirements, though this varies by programme.
  • Programmes are shorter in many cases, and built specifically around getting you job-ready rather than broad academic theory.
  • Cost is typically lower than a full university degree, and many programmes qualify for NSFAS funding.
  • The focus is practical — expect more hands-on, workplace-style learning than lecture-heavy theory.

What it costs, and funding

TVET fees are generally significantly lower than university fees, and NSFAS covers many approved TVET qualifications for eligible students — it's not only a university-funding scheme. Check the specific college and programme's NSFAS status directly, since not every course is automatically covered.

When a TVET college is a genuinely strong choice

A TVET qualification is worth serious consideration if you want to get into skilled, practical work faster than a degree timeline allows, if your APS doesn't clear your target degree's minimum but you don't want to lose time, or if the career you're aiming for is genuinely better served by hands-on trade or technical training than by an academic degree. It isn't a fallback option — for the right career direction, it's the more direct route.
