"Just get a degree" is common advice, but it isn't always the right call — a diploma or higher certificate can be the faster, cheaper, more direct route into the same career. Here's what actually separates them, based on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) that SAQA uses to classify every qualification in the country.
Higher Certificate (NQF Level 5)
A one-year qualification, usually the most accessible entry point in terms of APS. It's often practical and job-focused, and it can also work as a stepping stone — many higher certificates articulate into a related diploma if you want to keep building on it later.
Diploma (NQF Level 6)
Typically three years, offered at universities of technology and some TVET colleges as well as traditional universities. Diplomas are generally more practical and workplace-focused than degrees, often including in-service training or work-integrated learning, and they're built specifically around particular careers rather than broad academic fields.
Bachelor's Degree (NQF Level 7)
Usually three to four years, more theoretical and academically broad than a diploma. A degree is generally the required entry point if you're planning to study further at postgraduate level, and some professions (certain engineering registrations, for example) specifically require a degree rather than a diploma.
Which one is right for you?
APS requirements generally increase as you move from higher certificate to diploma to degree, but APS shouldn't be the only factor. Consider how you learn best — diplomas suit learners who want more hands-on, practical training — the total cost and time commitment, and whether your target career actually requires a degree or genuinely values practical diploma-level training just as highly.
You can move between them
None of these choices are permanent walls. Articulation routes let you move from a higher certificate into a diploma, or from a diploma into a related degree, once you've built up the academic credit to support it. Starting with a diploma doesn't close off a degree later — it can be a genuinely practical way in if your APS doesn't clear the degree minimum straight out of matric.
