Courses You Can Study With Mathematical Literacy

There's a persistent myth that choosing Mathematical Literacy over pure Mathematics shuts down most of your options after matric. It closes some doors, but far fewer than learners often assume — and it's worth knowing exactly which is which before you panic about a subject choice you made years ago.

What Maths Lit does close off

Be realistic about this list: pure sciences (Physics, Chemistry-heavy degrees), Engineering, Actuarial Science, and most Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering programmes require pure Mathematics specifically, almost always with a fairly high minimum percentage. If one of these is your goal and you're still early enough to switch, it's worth having that conversation with your school.

Fields still realistically open to you

  • Humanities — most Arts, Social Science, Languages and Law degrees don't require pure Mathematics.
  • Some Commerce streams — general BCom, Marketing, Human Resources and Public Administration often accept Maths Lit at many universities, though BCom Accounting and Economics-heavy streams frequently still require pure Mathematics — always check the specific programme.
  • Education — particularly Foundation and Intermediate Phase teaching.
  • Social Work, Nursing and many Health-adjacent diplomas — requirements vary by institution, so confirm directly.
  • Hospitality, Tourism and many diploma-level qualifications at universities of technology and TVET colleges.

Always check the specific requirement

This is the part that catches learners out: requirements for the "same" degree can differ from one university to another, and even between similarly named degrees at the same institution. Never assume a Maths Lit pass gets you in just because it worked for someone else's application — confirm it for your specific programme, at your specific university.

If you're not sure yet

If your career direction is still open, that's a normal place to be — use it to your advantage by exploring programmes across both Maths Lit-friendly and pure-Mathematics fields before you commit to applications.
